Larry E. Brasher was born in California in 1935, the son of a Santa Fe Mechanical Department employee. He attended 13 schools growing up while his family moved around the Santa Fe system, from Los Angeles to Chicago, and south as far as Louisiana. Many of his fondest memories, including watching the magnificent 5011 Class locomotives at work, are associated with Belen, New Mexico.

He has written two previous books about the Santa Fe, The One Spot Twins (Santa Fe Historical & Modeling Society, 2001) and The 132 Story (South Platte Press, 2005), as well as articles for Classic Trains magazine. He is retired and lives in Florida.
