Bill Kaufman taught school for twenty-five years but long since retired. He has written articles for Railroad Model Craftsman and Model Railroad Planning on everything from railroad operations, to the Richmond Pacific Railroad, and has written various books, teacher’s manuals, and software programs for education. He has done oral presentations locally and nationally on operations, on scenery, on the State Belt Railroad itself and on planning and building his home layout version of the State Belt.

He edited the newsletter of the Pacific Coast Region of the National Model Railroad Association (NMRA), Branch Line, for many years and the Operations Special Interest Group magazine Dispatcher’s Office for a couple. He has also served as Vice President for Special Projects for the NMRA.

He and his wife have two children, one of whom is married to the co-author, and three grandchildren.
